Ages 55 to 70 come from the formula below. Ages 71 and over are the Canada Revenue Agency's prescribed factors. A RRIF set up before 1993 that has had no new money added uses 5.26% at age 71 and the same factors after that.
A worked example
Take a RRIF worth $500,000 on January 1, 2026, held by someone who is 72 that day. The factor at 72 is 5.40%.
$500,000 × 5.40% = $27,000
At least $27,000 has to come out of the RRIF during 2026. It can be paid monthly, quarterly, or as one withdrawal. The whole amount is taxable income for the year. Next year's minimum is worked out again from the new January 1 value and the factor for age 73, which is 5.53%.
The formula under age 71
There is no table below 71. The factor is 1 divided by (90 minus your age at the start of the year).
At 65: 1 ÷ (90 − 65) = 1 ÷ 25 = 4.00%. On $500,000 that is a minimum of $20,000.
The formula applies at any age under 71, so a RRIF opened at 60 has a minimum of 1 ÷ 30, or 3.33%.
Rules that affect the minimum
The age that counts is your age on January 1. You can choose to base the minimum on your spouse or common-law partner's age instead, and a younger spouse lowers it.
No minimum applies in the year the RRIF is set up. It starts the following year. December 31 of the year you turn 71 is the last day you can contribute to your own RRSP, and also the deadline to close it by converting it to a RRIF, buying an annuity, or cashing it out.
The minimum is a floor. You can always withdraw more, and every dollar withdrawn is taxable in the year you receive it.
Common questions
What is the RRIF minimum withdrawal at age 71?
The minimum is 5.28% of the RRIF's value on January 1 if you are 71 at the start of the year. On a $500,000 RRIF that is $26,400.
What is the RRIF minimum withdrawal at 65?
Under 71 the minimum is 1 divided by (90 minus your age). At 65 that is 1/25, or 4.00%. At 70 it is 1/20, or 5.00%.
Which age is used to calculate the RRIF minimum?
Your age at the beginning of the year, on January 1. You can elect to use your spouse or common-law partner's age instead. A younger spouse means a lower minimum.
Do I have to take a RRIF withdrawal in the first year?
No. The minimum applies starting in the year after the year you set up the RRIF. You can withdraw more than the minimum in any year, but not less.
Did RRIF minimum withdrawal rates change for 2026?
No. The factors are prescribed by regulation and are not indexed. The table for 2026 is the one that has applied since 2015.
