Scenario Lab+

Plan for the big one-off moments

Most retirements include a few large sums that arrive or leave all at once. Add them to your plan and Scenario Lab+ shows what each one does to every year that follows.

Gary is an example retiree from Ontario who retired at 60 with $500K. Scenario Lab+ shows the year his downsize lands and every year after.

  1. At 70 Gary sells the house for $550,000 and buys a condo for $400,000. The $150,000 difference goes into his savings.

Start from what's actually happening

Pick a downsize, an investment property, an inheritance, or describe something of your own. Enter the amounts in today's dollars and the age it happens.

Sell one home and buy another in a single step
Inheritances received, or gifts to your family
Any other lump sum, in or out
Gary's downsize sits in his plan with its amount and the age it happens.

Tell us where the money goes

Money coming in typically lands in non-registered or cash savings. Money going out can come from cash, non-registered, TFSA, RRSP, or RRIF accounts. For a couple, a joint event can be shared between both partners' accounts.

Gary enters the sale and the purchase. Scenario Lab+ works out the net and puts it where he chooses.

Tax impact of one-time events

Selling your principal residence or receiving an inheritance adds no tax. A gain on a cottage or a rental is taxed as a capital gain, and a lump sum such as severance as income, in the year it happens. You enter the gain yourself, so the estimate follows your own cost base.

Principal residence sales and inheritances stay tax-free
Capital gains taxed in the year of the sale
Severance and similar lump sums counted as income
Gary's downsize in the year-by-year table. The year he turns 70, his non-registered savings go from $24,438 to $168,309.

Just tried it out for shifts and kicks and it calculated the same earliest retirement year as my spreadsheets. Great, easy to use tool.

I tried the savings goal calculator (mid 30s here) and found it very easy and clear to understand. I'm a good saver but always been intimidated to figure out how I'm doing for retirement. This made it easy to know I'm doing just fine.
