The 18% rule

The dollar limit is a ceiling. Your own room for 2026 is the lesser of two numbers: 18% of your earned income in 2025, or $33,810.

Someone who earned $90,000 in 2025 gets $90,000 × 18% = $16,200 of new room. Someone who earned $220,000 would calculate $39,600 and is capped at $33,810.

Two adjustments follow. A pension adjustment from a workplace pension plan reduces the new room. Unused room from earlier years is added on top. The total is your deduction limit, and it is printed on your notice of assessment.

The contribution deadline

Contributions count for a tax year if they are made during that year or in the first 60 days of the next one. For the 2026 tax year the deadline is March 1, 2027.

That date is the 60th day of 2027. The Canada Revenue Agency has not yet listed it on its important dates page, which still shows March 2, 2026 for the 2025 tax year. When the 60th day falls on a weekend, the deadline moves to the next business day.

A separate cut-off applies by age. December 31 of the year you turn 71 is the last day you can contribute to your own RRSP.
