How the limit is set
The TFSA dollar limit is indexed to inflation and rounded to the nearest $500. That rounding is why the limit often stays the same for several years and then moves in a $500 step. It has been $7,000 since 2024.
The one exception in the table is 2015, when the limit was set at $10,000 for a single year.
Working out your own room
The $109,000 total applies only if you were at least 18 and a resident of Canada in every year since 2009. Room starts to accumulate in the year you turn 18, and unused room carries forward indefinitely.
Your room on January 1 is the new year's limit, plus any room you had not used, plus whatever you withdrew the year before. Someone who turned 18 in 2015 adds the limits from 2015 to 2026, which comes to $78,000.
A new resident starts accumulating room on the day they become a resident of Canada, and gets the full limit for that year. The Canada Revenue Agency shows your room in My Account, based on what financial institutions have reported.
